SAN DIEGO (AP) - A 62-year-old man competing in a surfing contest in San Diego has died after being found floating face down in the water at La Jolla Shores.

Fire Rescue Department spokesman Lee Swanson says lifeguards tried to revive the man until paramedics arrived at Scripps Pier. They took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner’s office will investigate the cause of death.

The man, who has not been identified, was participating in a surfing contest to raise funds for UC San Diego’s cancer center.
