PHOENIX (AP) - Republicans now account for the largest bloc of Arizona’s 3.4 million registered voters, outnumbering independents for the first time since January 2014.

Registration figures released Monday by the Secretary of State’s Office shows that there are just over 1,185,000 Republicans registered in time for the Aug. 30 state primary election, compared with more than 1,164,000 independents and approximately 1,019,000 Democrats.

The Green and Libertarian parties also recorded registration gains in the latest figures. Combined they account for less than 1 percent of the total registration.

Secretary of State Michele Reagan says parties’ registration gains and a drop in the number of independents seem to indicate that voters are re-engaging with political parties. She says she’s optimistic it’ll mean higher turnout at the polls.
