COVINGTON, La. (AP) - A boil water advisory is in effect for the entire city of Covington because of a break in a major line.

News outlets report that city officials announced the advisory Monday afternoon after a 12-inch water main unexpectedly broke.

Crews were not able to repair the problem quickly enough to avert a significant loss of water pressure. When water pressure drops too low, a boil water order is put in place as a precaution until further notice.

The Advocate reports that it is the third time since April that the city has been under a boil water advisory.

Officials say water intended for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth or preparing food should be boiled for a full minute in a clean container after the water has reached a rolling boil.
