WINDSOR, Vt. (AP) - A Hartland exterminator is petitioning the federal government to change the name of a more-than-3,000-foot peak.

The Valley News reports (https://bit.ly/2bM5Mlm ) Robert Hutchins has been gathering petition signatures to change the name of Mount Ascutney to Cas-Cad-Nac.

Hutchins says the traditional Abenaki lived in the region for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. He says Ascutney is an Anglicized version of the Abenaki word Ascutegnik, meaning “meeting of the waters.”

A researcher for the U.S. Board on Geologic Names says the board made Mount Ascutney official in 1960 and established Cas-Cad-Nac as an official variant.

The group has referred the matter to the Vermont Board of Libraries. State officials say the issue will likely be taken up later this year if Hutchins turns in his petitions soon.
