SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - Police are investigating the shooting death of a man along the levee path of the San Lorenzo River in Santa Cruz.

The Santa Cruz Police Department says officers responded to a report of a shooting on the levee pathway Tuesday and found a man with a gunshot wound to the torso.

The unidentified man died at the scene. Officials say his identity is being withheld until his family is notified.

The department says witnesses told police two men were arguing just before one of them shot the other. The shooter then fled the area on foot.

Santa Cruz Police spokeswoman Joyce Blaschke says both men are transients and the shooter is known to police.

A motive in the shooting has not been determined.
