PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s first in a series of annual grants to communities to help improve bicycle infrastructure will go to Gardiner.

The coalition is giving Gardiner more than $12,000 to support the city’s bicycle and pedestrian projects, which include the extension of the Cobbossee Trail.

The coalition says the grant is the first of its kind and is funded by proceeds from its week-long BikeMaine ride. The grants will focus on the promotion of bicycle and pedestrian safety in communities that have hosted BikeMaine in the past.

Gardiner hosted more than 300 BikeMaine riders, staff members and volunteers in 2014.
