BELLE CHASSE, La. (AP) - Plaquemines Parish officials say a levee breach behind a refinery has more than tripled in size, despite attempts to plug it.

The hole was about 20 feet wide at first. A news release Sunday said it’s now about 70 feet wide.

Officials say the break doesn’t threaten any homes or Louisiana Highway 23 near the Phillips 66 Co.’s Alliance refinery south of New Orleans.

One helicopter was dropping one-ton sandbags into the breach on Saturday, and officials say two were doing so on Sunday.

Levees protect the parish’s east bank from both the river and the marshes of the Barataria basin. The break faces the Barataria basin.

Parish spokesman Michael Powell said Saturday that the parish was notified Friday evening about the breach, found where a pipeline crosses the levee.
