LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - A Lexington County grape grower and wine maker is appealing to the public to help him harvest five vineyards of ripened muscadines.

Shannon Mercer tells The State newspaper in Columbia (https://bit.ly/2bZekEy) that he needs help for his Mercer House Estate Winery, which opened nine years ago. He says friends have helped in the past, but they’ve gotten older and the work is harder for them.

He says he can no longer afford the labor he needs. Instead, he asks people to take ‘ownership’ of several vines and be responsible for harvesting the grapes in return for a couple of cases of the finished product specifically from those vines.

He makes 15 wines ranging in taste from ultra-dry to very sweet. He says he can pick 300 pounds a day alone.
