NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A federal judge has convicted a Passaic County man of illegally operating an ambulance company after he was banned from participating in federal health care programs due to prior convictions.

The judge on Tuesday found 56-year-old Imadeldin Khair guilty of heath care fraud, obstructing a federal audit, tax evasion and money laundering.

Khair was banned in 2004 from participating in Medicare, Medicaid and other federal health programs for at least 11 years after he was convicted of state health care fraud. But prosecutors say almost immediately, Khair began operating an ambulance business in his brother’s name and collected more than $9 million from Medicare and Medicaid.

Khair faces up to 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced in November.
