OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Education says Oakland Unified School District discriminated against a 9-year-old autistic boy when he was restrained 92 times in one school year.

The Bay Area News Group reports that the June decision says Stuart Candell was held face-down by adults for a total of more than 36 hours and secluded in a small windowless room while attending Anova Center for Education in Concord for less than a year.

Disability Rights California represented the Candell family. It says the district must take steps to prevent such restraints.

Stuart’s mother, Bonnie Candell, says she is thrilled with outcome of the case. Anova Center did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Oakland Unified says it is complying with the terms of the resolution.
