GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say an Etowah County coroner accused of stealing prescription medication has been charged.

Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin tells multiple news outlets that 52-year-old Michael Head is charged with second-degree theft of property and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Head was arrested Tuesday after authorities searched his home in Gadsden.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Natalie Barton says the search was a part of an ongoing investigation.

Deputies also arrested Head’s son, 26-year-old John Simon Head, of Gadsden, at the home. He is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The father is being held at the Etowah County Detention Center on a $4,000 property bond. His son is being held without bond.

It’s unclear if the two men have attorneys.
