PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - The executive director of the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority has been fired.

News outlets report that housing authority’s board fired Harry “Hal” Short with cause through a 4-2 vote during a Tuesday night board meeting.

The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/2auxA0B ) reports Board Vice Chairwoman Trulinda Britt says he was fired because of “underperformance” and for unspecified “actions that damaged” the authority.

Short says he had offered to retire and was disappointed by the board’s choice to fire him. He says he didn’t know why he was fired.

Short says he worked for the authority for 44 years.
