RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A New York City man has been convicted of fatally striking another man with his own vehicle as he attempted to stop a carjacking on Long Island in November 2014.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2atJuS0 ) a jury on Tuesday found 49-year-old Edwin Gutierrez guilty of second-degree murder, robbery and larceny in the death of 69-year-old Dionel Ramirez.

Prosecutors say Ramirez parked his car at a Bay Shore 7-Eleven, leaving it running while picking up food he was to deliver to a food pantry. That’s when Gutierrez climbed in the car and started to drive away.

Authorities say Ramirez ran and stood in front of his car but the Manhattan man hit the gas and ran the North Amityville man over. Ramirez was pronounced dead at a hospital.
