PICKENS, S.C. (AP) - The body of a missing 6-year-old boy has been recovered from a Pickens County pond.

Chief Deputy Creed Hashe tells local media outlets that the boy’s body was found Monday night in a pond in some woods.

The boy had been reported missing six hours earlier. Coroner Kandy Kelley said in a statement that the victim was Benjamin Jacob Jones.

Deputies had gotten a call at around 5:30 p.m. that the boy had wandered away from his home. Hashe says the child’s mother says she let him outside to play and couldn’t find him when she called him inside for dinner.

Authorities are still investigating, but Hashe says he thinks the child may have slipped into the water.
