FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - A man is dead following a police officer-involved shooting in Fairbanks.

Yumi McCulloch with the Fairbanks Police Department said police received a call Tuesday afternoon stating an armed man had entered a motel room pointing a gun. She says a struggle ensued and the man fled on foot.

She says the man, who was being pursued by police, grabbed a hostage. She says police used a stun gun but that was not effective and that as a last resort, the man was fatally shot.

The man’s name was not immediately disclosed. McCulloch did not immediately know how many officers were involved or how many shots were fired.

She says protocol dictates that officers involved in a shooting be placed on administrative leave.
