SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Police say a 77-year-old Maine man crashed into the outside of a Macy’s department store in South Portland after suffering a medical emergency while behind the wheel.

The accident happened around 9:35 a.m. Monday at the Maine Mall.

The driver told officers that the last thing he remembers was stopping to let pedestrians pass before his GMC pickup truck struck a fire hydrant and slammed into the Macy’s.

Lt. Todd Bernard says the driver and a 14-year-old male passenger were hospitalized with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Both were not identified.

The building sustained minor damage and the hydrant will need to be replaced.

Police say the driver did not appear to be impaired. It’s unclear what his medical emergency was.

An investigation is ongoing.
