RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Officials say the Virginia Lottery posted a record profit in the latest fiscal year.

The Virginia Lottery said in a statement that the $588 million profit for fiscal year that ended June 30 is the most the Lottery has brought in over one year in its 28-year history.

The Lottery supports roughly 8 percent of Virginia’s education budget.

The Lottery says sales grew nearly 9 percent from the previous fiscal year to more than $2 billion. Officials the high sales in part to the unprecedented $1.58 billion Powerball jackpot earlier this year.

Officials say Virginia Lottery players won more than $1.2 billion in prizes last fiscal year. Nearly 30 tickets won $1 million or more.
