NEW YORK (AP) - A water main break has sent water spewing into the streets of Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

It happened Monday night at West 89th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

The break flooded nearby streets and sidewalks and even caused a giant sinkhole to open up, swallowing a BMW SUV.

Firefighters are inspecting basements in the area, and say some have 5 or 6 feet of water.

Crews were able to shut off the water after about 1 ½ hours, and are now working to repair the broken main.

Streets in the area are closed, and the MTA is rerouting buses.

No injuries have been reported.

It’s unclear what caused the break.
