ELMORE, Ala. (AP) - The Elmore Correctional Facility has been placed on lockdown after an inmate was stabbed to death.

The Alabama Department of Corrections said a statement that 24-year-old Davieon Cotez Williams was stabbed multiple times during an altercation Tuesday afternoon.

He was later pronounced dead at the facility’s infirmary.

Prison officials say another inmate, 41-year-old Jonathan Gladney, was detained as a suspect in the stabbing. Gladney is serving a life sentence on a 2006 manslaughter conviction out of Barbour County.

Williams was serving a five-year sentence for a rape conviction in Chambers County.

Officials say the prison will remain on lockdown until the investigation is complete.
