NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard says a guardsman has been found guilty of rape in a general court-martial in Norfolk.

The Coast Guard said in a news release that 32-year-old Petty Officer 3rd Class Bryan J. Sullivan was found guilty Wednesday of violating the military code for rape and abusive sexual contact.

Officials say the rape occurred in May 2015 in Cape May, New Jersey. Sullivan was assigned to the Coast Guard cutter Dependable, but officials provided no more details of the incident.

Officials say Sullivan was sentenced to seven years at the Naval Consolidated Brig in Chesapeake, Virginia. He is also subject to total forfeiture of pay and allowances and a dishonorable discharge.
