EL DORADO, Ark. (AP) - The El Dorado School District is asking a federal judge to declare that the district cannot participate in school choice because it would violate a 1971 desegregation agreement.

Attorneys representing the district asked U.S. District Judge Susan Hickey on Tuesday to make the declaration after the Arkansas Board of Education voted last month to allow an El Dorado family to transfer into the Parkers Chapel School District.

El Dorado is one of 16 districts that has claimed an exemption to the state’s school choice law.

According to Arkansas Department of Education data, the El Dorado district is about 49 percent black and 38 percent white. The Parkers Chapel district is nearly 85 percent white.

The El Dorado News-Times reports (https://bit.ly/2bBY8KZ ) Hickey plans to rule by the end of the week.
