CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a man asking for money while standing on an Interstate 77 ramp in Charlotte has been struck and killed.

Troopers told local media that the 47-year-old man was hit late Tuesday morning while standing in the middle of two left turn lanes. Troopers say the man’s pans were caught by a truck hauler and he was dragged beneath the truck and killed.

A trooper says the truck driver didn’t know he had run over anyone.

The victim’s name has not been released.

Trooper John Burgin says there are no trespassing signs posted to prohibit panhandling.
