RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Richmond man is facing a felony charge after authorities say he killed a dog he had recently agreed to foster.

News outlets report that 22-year-old Wilfred J. Lee was arrested Monday on a charge of felony animal cruelty.

Jillian Webster of Richmond says she wrote a post on a private Facebook group earlier this month, asking for someone to foster her dog, Monkei, before she left for China. She plans to teach English there for the next year.

Webster says that shortly after leaving the country, she received messages from Lee that concerned her. Webster’s friends ultimately reported the dog’s death to authorities. It is unclear how the dog died.

Lee’s attorney, Robert Lichtenstein, says he will “zealously” defend his client. The charge carries a maximum five-year sentence.
