SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois’ capital city is welcoming Olympic swimmer and gold medal winner Ryan Held back to his hometown.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports (https://bit.ly/2bSOBQb ) Held is scheduled to return to Springfield on Friday.

Held is a 2014 graduate of Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. He won a gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

The public is invited to line Washington Street leading to the high school’s sports complex Friday evening to welcome Held’s motorcade, which is expected to arrive at the school’s West Campus around 5:30 p.m.

Held will sign autographs before the game and be honored at half-time of Friday’s football game.

The Springfield YMCA is holding an event Saturday. Held, who now attends North Carolina State University, began his swimming career at the YMCA.
