ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - One of the attorneys who prosecuted Casey Anthony has lost his bid for re-election as the State Attorney for the Orlando area.

State Attorney Jeff Ashton lost his race Tuesday against challenger Aramis Ayala in the Democratic primary.

There is no Republican opponent for the general election.

Ayala is a former prosecutor and public defender who had worked under Ashton.

Ayala had 56.9 percent of the vote and Ashton had 43.1 percent.

Ashton was an assistant state attorney when he helped prosecute Anthony, the mother charged with killing her toddler.

She was acquitted of killing her daughter, Caylee, during a 2011 trial that garnered worldwide attention.

The Orlando Sentinel (https://bit.ly/2ccnD3Y ) reports that a Washington-based political action committee linked to liberal billionaire George Soros contributed $975,000 to Ayala’s campaign.
