CITRONELLE, Ala. (AP) - Federal authorities have shut down a cockfighting pit in southwest Alabama.

Humane Society of the United States spokeswoman Stephanie Twining said Thursday that the FBI uncovered a huge arena space of more than 1,000 animals after executing a search warrant July 29. The arena had cockfighting paraphernalia, trophies and rental holdings spaces for participants’ birds.

An affidavit shows a FBI agent witnessed Alabama Gamefowl Breeder’s Association President John Helm addressing attendees at an illegal cockfight in April. The agent said there were 117 participants at the derby, and each had seven birds competing.

The agent also claims in the affidavit that Helms encouraged all participants to join the AGBA and solicited donations.

No arrests have been made. There was no one at the location when the FBI seized the evidence.
