BOSTON (AP) - Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families say a 4-month-old who was found unresponsive in a Lynn homeless shelter last year died of natural causes.

The Boston Globe reports (https://bit.ly/2awKDM0 ) the DCF’s findings were based on their own investigation into the September 2015 death of Charles Brand III as well as the medical examiner’s review.

Brand was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital less than 24 hours after he was found not breathing at the shelter.

The death was investigated as a possible case of child endangerment but state officials concluded that Brand did not die as the result of neglect or abuse.

The state medical examiner found that Brand died from “complications of acute bronchopneumonia,” which causes widespread clotting and coagulation problems in the blood vessels.
