BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) - MDI Biological Laboratory has broken ground on a new training laboratory that will double the facility’s capacity for hands-on biomedical research training when it is completed.

The laboratory was founded in the late 19th century and performs research with a goal of improving human health. It is located on Mount Desert Island.

The new facility will be more than 6,500 square feet, including a two-story building that will house a training laboratory on the first floor and classroom and meeting space on the second floor.

The laboratory says the work is being funded with a $3 million state bond issue that was approved by Maine voters in 2014. The bond is designed to expand Maine’s biotechnology sector.
