Animal control officials are looking for a monkey and its owner after the primate bit a 9-year-old girl in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Meghan Contiis a spokeswoman for the Virginia Beach Police Department’s animal control unit. She said in a phone interview that the child was bitten about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on a sidewalk near the beach. Conti says the monkey’s owner fled the area with the animal after the incident.

Conti says the primate is a white-headed capuchin monkey. She says it is blackish brown with white on its fur. She says it is a little larger than a housecat, about the size of a medium poodle.

Conti says the girl was taken to an emergency room, but provided no other details on the nature of the child’s injuries.
