BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - An assistant administrator at a Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs nursing home has been arrested on suspicion of stealing money from a resident of the facility.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/2axf5EA ) that 51-year-old Thomas W. Shoemaker, of Monroe, was arrested Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation of Veterans Affairs facilities by the state inspector general’s office.

Shoemaker faces charges of exploitation of persons with infirmities and theft of assets of an aged or disabled person.

Law enforcement documents show Shoemaker is accused of stealing from a person described as having “severe cognitive impairment.” Shoemaker allegedly transferred nearly $2,000 from the resident’s account directly into his own account.

Shoemaker served as assistant administrator at the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home from 2004 until his resignation in 2013.
