SHAWSVILLE, Va. (AP) - A former principal cleared of an assault charge last year has been approved by the Montgomery County school board to be the principal of a middle school.

Media outlets report 57-year-old Carol Khaler was approved for the position Tuesday at Shawsville Middle School. She will begin her new assignment immediately.

Khaler was placed on administrative leave in March 2015 as principal of Gilbert Linkous Elementary School in Blacksburg following allegations that she slapped a special-needs student across the face during a “melt down” by the student in her office last February. She was charged with assault.

A judge dropped the charge against Khaler during a July 2015 trial, ruling that he couldn’t determine exactly what occurred.

Khaler became principal on assignment at Christiansburg Elementary School and Primary School in January.
