BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A Springdale man has pleaded not guilty to capital murder in the death of his girlfriend’s 3-month-old son.

Twenty-one-year-old Edward Alexis Martinez-Torrez entered the plea Thursday in Benton County Circuit Court.

Prosecutors say police and medical personnel were called to a home in Bethel Heights on June 9 because of a baby not breathing. The child - referred to only as J.R. in a probable cause affidavit - was taken first to a Springdale hospital then to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, where he died.

The affidavit says doctors and an autopsy determined the child suffered a fractured skull.

Martinez-Torres is being held in the Benton County Jail on $500,000 bond.
