FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Police in Fayetteville have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run.

A statement issued Thursday said 39-year-old Stoney Gene Riley was initially taken into custody for unrelated and unserved warrants. Riley is now charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Justin Thomas Atkins.

Investigators say Atkins was approached by a car on Monday whose driver asked if he had any narcotics for sale. Atkins said he didn’t and was walking away when the vehicle struck him. Police say Atkins walked to walk to a nearby house, whose resident called 911. He was taken to the hospital for surgery, but died as a result of his injuries.

Riley is being held in the Cumberland County jail under a $25,000 bond. It’s not known if he has an attorney.
