PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A Pine Ridge man accused of assaulting a federal officer has pleaded not guilty.

Twenty-two-year-old Franklin Long Black Cat is accused of spitting on a deputy U.S. marshal in Rapid City on July 1. He faces an assault charge that carries a maximum punishment of up to eight years in prison.

U.S. Attorney Randolph Seiler says a trial date was not immediately set.
