PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota’s secretary of state wrangled with a rattlesnake, and won.

Shantel Krebs lives west of Fort Pierre, and encountered the snake on Wednesday evening.

Krebs tells KCCR radio that the snake was “too close for comfort,” so she shot it with a pistol.

Authorities around South Dakota are reporting an increase in human encounters with rattlesnakes, particularly in the western Black Hills. They say hot, dry weather means snakes are more actively seeking water and shelter.
