MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) - Two new, larger cranes that will allow South Carolina’s ports to load a new generation of larger containerships will be installed at the state Ports Authority’s Wando Welch Terminal in Mount Pleasant.

The new cranes were delivered last week from China, where they were built. They will able to lift containers 155 feet above the docks to load and unload larger containerships that will be calling now that the Panama Canal has been widened.

The Wando terminal is the site of a $44 million project to upgrade the wharf and infrastructure to serve the larger container ships.

Last month, the Ports Authority board approved the purchase of two more cranes of similar size. They will be delivered later next year.
