BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota health officials are responding to a saltwater spill in Bowman County of about 168,000 gallons.

The Health Department says the Tuesday spill occurred about 9 miles southwest of Rhame at a well site owned by Texas-based Denbury Onshore LLC.

The company didn’t immediately respond to telephone messages seeking comment.

The state says 4,000 barrels of source water leaked from a pipeline and entered a dry creek bed.

The water used for recovering oil is higher in dissolved solids and minerals than fresh water. The Health Department says it will work with the company on plans for remediation.
