PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - A circuit court judge has rejected a petition to recall Portsmouth Mayor Kenny Wright.

Local news outlets report that Judge James Hawks ruled on Tuesday that only 6,012 of the 8,530 signatures collected on the petition were valid.

Many signatures were deemed invalid because some of voters weren’t qualified to sign, some signatures were duplicated, other voters couldn’t be identified and some petition paperwork was lacking.

Portsmouth resident and Norfolk businessman Robert Marcus started the petition over 14 months ago to force a recall election. Marcus says he will continue to push for a recall election.

Wright is running for re-election against five challengers on Nov. 8.
