FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - A Tarrant County grand jury has indicted a 21-year-old man on charges stemming from the shooting of a Fort Worth police officer in a gunbattle that left the man’s father dead.

The grand jury indicted Ed Russell McIver Jr. on charges of hindering apprehension and evidence tampering. Both charges carry potential 10-year prison sentences upon conviction.

The district attorney’s office had preferred an attempted capital murder charge against McIver, as well as firearms theft and drug possession counts. Despite the indictment on lesser charges, Deputy Criminal Chief Prosecutor Kevin Rousseau said “McIver was a willing participant in this incident which resulted in the attempted murder” of Officer Matt Pearce during the March 15 gunbattle. Pearce shot and killed McIver’s father, 42-year-old Ed Russell McIver Sr., in the gunfight.
