PILESGROVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Authorities have charged a Pennsylvania woman with animal abuse after a New Jersey state trooper broke the window of her car to rescue a dog that was suffering from heat stroke.

The trooper was called to a parking lot in Pilesgrove Township after a person spotted the Toy Poodle inside the vehicle with only one window open about an inch. The trooper saw the dog was in obvious distress lying on its side inside a crate.

After breaking the window, the trooper gave the dog water and it was taken to a veterinary hospital. The vet said the dog was in critical condition.

The dog’s owner, a 43-year-old woman from State College, Pennsylvania, is charged with animal abuse. Her name has not been released.

The dog is in stable condition.
