RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The political committee of the State Employees Association of North Carolina has endorsed Democrat Roy Cooper for governor over Republican incumbent Pat McCrory.

The 53,000-member union for state workers and retirees announced Tuesday its Employees Political Action Committee backed the sitting attorney general, saying he’s an advocate for the middle class and praising his work in public service.

It was viewed as a positive for McCrory four years ago when the committee endorsed neither McCrory nor Democratic rival Walter Dalton.

SEANC (see-NICK’) Chairman Tony Smith says McCrory didn’t stand up for workers and retirees this year on pay and pension issues. The group also cited McCrory’s executive order last year scaling back approved personal leave for SEANC members to attend their annual convention and reducing meetings with the governor’s administration.
