LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) - Police say they’ve rescued a man who became fatigued while swimming across the Wreck Lead Channel section of the Reynolds Channel on Long Island.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2aR7kIo ) police were called around 11:45 a.m. Monday when a swimmer became tired and began to struggle in the water beneath the Long Beach Bridge.

Police say officers were able to pull the 33-year-old Hempstead man from the channel’s strong currents. The waterway separates Long Beach from Island Park.

The man was taken to a hospital as a precaution and has refused further medical attention.
