BURLINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a New Jersey man fatally shot his wife and son before killing himself.

Police responded to 50-year-old Ruben Johnson’s Burlington Township home around 10:15 p.m. Monday after a relative asked authorities to check on the family.

Investigators determined Johnson shot his 48-year-old wife Mishanda and their 10-year-old son before turning the weapon on himself. The child’s name was not released.

The couple also had a daughter who lives in Florida.

The motive for the shooting is being investigated. No other injuries were reported in the incident.

Neighbors said the family had lived in the community for about 10 years. Their home was scheduled for a sheriff’s sale in October, according to a list of the county’s foreclosure sales.

Friends said Ruben Johnson managed a nightclub in East Orange that his father owned. It wasn’t clear if his wife also worked.

A neighbor, 18-year-old Christian Wagner, told The Philadelphia Inquirer that Johnson’s son played basketball and rode his bike down the street with other neighborhood kids.

“The kid was always outside, playful, happy,” Wagner said, adding that he saw no signs of trouble with the family or the boy.

Another neighbor, Leesa Branch, said Mishanda Johnson was “a great mother, a sweet person. She cared for her children greatly. She was so proud.”
