OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) - The chief Wapello County prosecutor says two Ottumwa officers were justified in shooting an armed man.

The officers were checking a report June 25 about a man shooting a rifle. Police have said Michael Heady Sr. wouldn’t put down his rifle and pointed it toward one of the officers before they fired, striking Heady twice in the torso. They’ve been identified as Sgt. Noah Aljets, a 12-year veteran of the force, and Officer Derek Shaw, who’s been on the force for nine years.

Heady underwent surgery at a hospital.

The Ottumwa Courier reports (https://bit.ly/2aJqWPV ) that Wapello County Attorney Gary Oldenburger said Tuesday the two officers had reason to believe they, the other officers and residents were endangered by Heady, so the two were justified in firing.
