COPIAGUE, N.Y. (AP) - Officials want to know who abandoned a filthy 34-foot boat in a Long Island marina with “dump me” spelled across the helm.

If the owner can’t be found, Babylon town officials say they’ll dispose of the boat. That could cost taxpayers $3,000 to $5,000.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/2aCAnPu ) says the cruiser was dumped at the Tanner Park Marina in the hamlet of Copiague (KOH’-payg) last week. It’s scrubbed of all identifying marks.

Babylon turned to Facebook for help in identifying the owner.

Town public safety director Pat Farrell says the boat is worthless. Its engine is shot.

Farrell says he encounters about 11 such cases a year and recalls only about five of the owners being located.

Consequences can include fines, labor costs and sometimes criminal charges.

This story has been corrected to show that Babylon, not Copiague, town officials are seeking owner of boat abandoned in Copiague.
