GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Western Michigan authorities have charged a man with assault and ethnic intimidation after they say he attacked a taxi driver while yelling “Trump.”

Twenty-three-year-old Jacob Holtzlander was arraigned Thursday in a Grand Rapids court in connection with the Nov. 12 incident. Police say he turned himself in earlier in the day.

WOOD-TV and The Grand Rapids Press report taxi driver Yemaj Adem picked up Holtzlander and several women. Adem dropped off the women but Holtzlander remained, and the two got into a dispute over the cost of the fare.

Adem told police Holtzlander repeatedly yelled President-elect Donald Trump’s last name as he struck the Ethiopian immigrant.

Defense attorney Charles Chamberlain Jr. says Holtzlander has a “substance-abuse issue” and will be assessed.

Dec. 13 is his scheduled preliminary examination.
