LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A Louisville mother is facing charges after police say she left her three young children at home alone, prompting one of the children to knock on a neighbor’s door and say “momma left me.”

WAVE-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2fPELNp ) 25-year-old Mercedes Nicole Cannon was arrested and charged with three counts of abandonment of a minor after officers found her children unattended in the family’s apartment early Tuesday morning.

Louisville Metro police say a neighbor called authorities after one of Cannon’s children, a 3-year-old, knocked on her door.

The other children are 21 months old and 8 months old.

Authorities say Cannon later returned, telling them she left the home Monday night, leaving the children unattended with the apartment door unlocked.

The children were placed into a relative’s custody.
