BENSON, N.C. (AP) - The N.C. Highway Patrol says a woman who was hit by a car while walking her children to a school bus stop has died.

Local media outlets report that the patrol said 34-year-old Maria Aguilar Suarez of Benson was walking her 8-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter to the school bus stop Thursday morning when she and the boy were hit by a car. The two were trapped under the car.

According to troopers, 8-year-old son, Juan Almanza, is expected to recover and is being treated at a local hospital for serious injuries, including a broken jaw and a large cut on his head. The patrol said the daughter was not hurt.

The patrol said charges against the driver are pending.
