UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) - A Prince George’s County police officer has been indicted on a charge of assault for allegedly striking with his cruiser a suspect who was running away on foot.

The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office said in a news release Thursday that Juan Hernandez was also indicted for misconduct in office.

Prosecutors say on June 13, Hernandez was one of two officers who arrived on scene of a report of an armed suspect. Officials say Hernandez pursued the suspect in his cruiser.

Prosecutors say Hernandez followed the suspect into a field and struck him with his cruiser. The suspect did not need medical attention.

Police say Hernandez’s police powers were suspended that day.

Hernandez could not be reached for comment. It is unknown if he has a lawyer.
