GROTON, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut man was killed after witnesses say he intervened during an assault in the parking lot of a Groton (GRAH’-tuhn) pub.

Police say 24-year-old Joey Gingerella was shot multiple times outside Ryan’s Pub early Sunday.

Pub owner Hubba Ryan tells The Day (https://bit.ly/2gPfaVT ) that people in the bar saw a man assaulting his girlfriend in a car in the parking lot.

Gingerella ran out to help and was shot to death.

His mother, Tammy de la Cruz, told the newspaper her son was doing the right thing when he was killed.

Gingerella had become known in the community in recent years for using his experience recovering from drug addiction to help others struggling with similar problems.

Officials are looking for a 30-year-old Groton man as the suspect.
